Google Adsense

What's AdSense?

Google AdSense is the program that can give you advertising revenue from each page on your website—with a minimal investment in time and no additional resources. Time is the only investment required.

AdSense delivers relevant text and image ads that are precisely targeted to your site and your site content. And when you add a Google search box to your site, AdSense delivers relevant text ads that are targeted to the Google search results pages generated by your visitors’ search request.

AdSense is NOT A FRAUD. Google AdSense is REAL and comes from the leading search engine company in the world. It was launched in June 2003. AdSense is a way to monetize and earn money from your site by putting Google ads from their advertising network Adwords.

It is very easy to become AdSense publisher. One application takes care of everything and once approved, you can simply cut and paste HTML code on your web page. That is it!! Ads start showing on your page suiting page content. One must spend good time on creating nice web site which really has value for its audience and once there is enough traffic coming in, your web site can generate thousands of dollars even if you are sleeping or you are on vacation. Best deal is you can be anywhere in the world and still earn!!!!!

I suggest you join the program (you've got nothing to lose as it is free) and see how your site will do with it.

Ads

Ads are context sensitive and Google’s innovative technology scans your page and shows ads that make sense according to the content of your web page. Look and feel of ads has to be decided by user using Google’s predefined ad formats. There are plenty of formats from which to choose from and you can then decide on the look and feel of those formats to suit you page or web site template.

You earn through various ways:

  1. Pay per click - this is the common way to earn which is you earn every time a visitor clicks on your ads.
  2. Pay per impression - an advertiser can specifically target your site and show ads where you earn via cost per 1,000 impression (e.g. you earn every time someone sees your ad, even though they don't click on it).
  3. Referral - you can also earn if you refer a visitor to use AdSense or Adwords, download the Google toolbar, etc.

CTR (Click Through Rate)

It depends on a number of things -- the topic of the site, the relevance of the ads to the site, and the purpose of the audience in visiting the site. A site that gives tips on finding a mortgage will attract users actively looking for a mortgage provider -- and will most likely click on the ads. That site can enjoy high click through rates. A dating site on the other hand where visitors are looking for dates, are not likely to be interested in the ads and hence CTR can be low.

Some types of ads do better than others depending on your content and layout. In our case, large rectangles in the middle of the content is the best, while leaderboards do not generate as much as income. Skys are the worst for us. Experiment and measure the results via channels and see which formats work best for you.

AdSense Guidelines and Rules

Follow the TOS and Program Policies VERY CAREFULLY -- they kick out publishers deemed generating "invalid clicks" which is their catch all term for cheating -- from asking users to click on ads to clicking your ads yourself to showing competing contextual ads on the same page as AdSense.

AdSense Payment

Note however that you only get paid IF AND ONLY IF you reach $100 in revenues every month - if not, your income is rolled over to the next month until you reach $100 in revenues.

Google does not use Paypal. They either send a check or send your payment via electronic fund transfer. They send their payments about 20-25 days after the end of the month in the US (speed of course depends on your location). Read Google AdSense Payments Guide.

Web Site Potential

Some sites do very well with AdSense (even in the millions of dollars a year) while many more sites do extremely poorly with the program (can't even earn $10 a month). One of the misconception people have about AdSense is they simply slap it in their websites and it will automatically earn them big money -- which is not true as evidenced by the many disgruntled webmasters.

Your income will depend on:

  1. Topic: of your site (if you have high paying keywords you stand to earn more)
  2. Responsiveness: of users to ads (are visitors coming to your site with blinders in their eye or do they look at the ads as additional complementary resource)
  3. Traffic: (you earn more with more traffic, even if you have low paying keywords or other metrics)
  4. Ads Customization: how you implement the ads on your site (some positions and colors work better than others)

Web Store

Think of your web site as a web store because it really is one. Decorate it thinking of your potential audience and plan it right. It will generate enough in return for you and your family. If you don’t have one or you can’t build one yourself, you may want to consider purchasing an established website that is either already earning money or at least setup to do so. You can find established websites on eBay for pretty reasonable prices. Go there and search for "Established Website" you should be able to find something that will work for you.
